Contra Costa Reports New Coronavirus Cases; Drive-Thru Testing

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY — Contra Costa Health Services announced another 10 confirmed cases of coronavirus on Monday, raising the total to 71. No new deaths were reported in the county. Neighboring Alameda County reported its first death, with 112 confirmed cases there.

Contra Costa is ramping up efforts on several fronts of the coronavirus war. Drive-thru testing has been introduced for first responders and health care workers. It is offered by appointment only. Call 925-570-0978 between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. for pre-screening and to make an appointment.

The county is also setting up three pop-up locations for people and businesses to donate medical supplies such as masks, goggles, face shields, unopened antibacterial and disinfecting wipes, and medical gowns.

On Sunday President Donald J. Trump said he would approve Gov. Gavin Newsom's request to declare a major disaster in California, freeing up federal resources to fight the state's growing coronavirus outbreak.

Trump also said he would send the USNS Mercy, a massive Navy hospital ship, to Los Angeles to help treat the area's surge of coronavirus patients. Previously, officials in Seattle had expected the ship would head there.

Newsom previously declared a state of emergency to provide additional resources, prevent price gouging and help the state better prepare for the virus's spread.
