Deadline Friday: Survey On Walnut Creek Drones

Just a few days remain to have your voice heard. Right now, more than 90 percent of respondents are in agreement.

WALNUT CREEK, CA — Should the Walnut Creek Police Department join other nearby law enforcement agencies in purchasing drones? Local residents have until Friday to weigh-in by taking an online survey on the city's website.

In introducing the survey, the city notes that the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office and several city police departments in the county have been running successful drone programs for years.

Here in Walnut Creek, police would like to use drones for:

  • Post-incident crime scene preservation and documentation
  • Bomb squad missions
  • Response to hazardous materials spills
  • Search and rescue operations
  • Public safety and life preservation missions, including (but not limited to barricaded subjects, hostage situations, active shooters, service of high-risk warrants, and apprehension of armed and dangerous and/or violent fleeing suspects
  • Disaster response and recovery
  • Response to specific requests from local, state or federal authorities for fire prevention and response
  • Response pursuant to legal and authorized investigative needs.

Hundreds of people have responded to the survey already, with more than 90 percent of registered respondents either strongly supporting or somewhat supporting their use.
