Donate Blood In Contra Costa County This February
The Red Cross is launching a campaign to raise awareness about cancer patients' need for blood.
CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA — Cancer patients use nearly a quarter of the U.S. blood supply, and the American Red Cross is launching its Give Blood to Give Time campaign to raise awareness about the patient demand for blood. The campaign calls for people to make a financial donation to fund American Cancer Society programs and ensure blood is available, or make a blood or platelet donation.
“A loved one’s cancer diagnosis often makes families and friends feel helpless,” said Dr. Pampee Young, Red Cross chief medical officer, in a press release. “When someone donates blood or platelets or makes a financial gift, they are helping to give patients and their families time, resources and the hope they need to fight back.”
An estimated third of the country will be diagnosed with cancer during their lives, according to the American Cancer Society. Chemotherapy, cancer and surgical procedures can damage bone marrow and reduce red blood cell and platelet production, the Red Cross said in a press release.

Cancer patients use an estimated five units of blood every minute, the Red Cross said.
“I think it’s safe to say that my successful battle with cancer depended upon complete strangers and their donated blood. For this, I am grateful,” said Stephenie Perry, whose cancer is in remission, in the press release. “Sometimes I hear stories from friends about people who are scared of needles or afraid to donate blood. I wish I could stand face-to-face with those people and tell them there is nothing scary about saving a life – a life like mine.”
