Football: Berean Christian Downs St. Helena 45-7

Eagles use big night by Lisle, tough defense to get past Saints.

Berean Christian 45, St. Helena 7

The Star: Logan Lisle started the first quarter with a bang, a 46-yard run on the first play of the game, and would score his third rushing touchdown of the game seconds into the second quarter.

The Turning Point: St. Helena faced a third-and-one at the Berean Christian 19, its best drive of the game at the time that would turn into its worst. Tyler Charrette stepped in front of Saints' quarterback Richard Hoppe's pass and took it 75 yards for a touchdown to push it to a 37-0 advantage that Berean Christian would take into halftime.

Bottom Line: The Eagles look to carry the momentum of the big victory to their first true test this season in Vallejo next week.

Logan Lisle's 46-yard run on the first play of the game set the pace in the Berean Christian High football team's dominating 45-7 victory at St. Helena High on Friday.

Whether it was the giant first-quarter offensive explosion or their ability to take advantage of mistakes by St. Helena, the Eagles did it quickly.

In fact, Lisle's big run was part of Berean Christian's longest scoring drive, a nine-play, 64-yard drive that came down to a fourth-and-one at the St. Helena three, which saw Lisle take the ball up the middle for the first score of the night.

"Logan Lisle is a football player. We are very, very proud of him," Eagles' head coach Mark Barcelon said.

Lisle's 104 yards on 13 carries and three touchdowns led the team in all categories. Luke Miner added a 42-yard run late in the fourth quarter and a touchdown reception in the first half.

"It happens like that sometimes, but that team is better than that score," Barcelon said.

The Eagles only tallied 264 total yards in the game, but Saints mistakes early in the first half helped the score get out of hand.

St. Helena was forced to punt during its first possession, but punter David Martinez couldn't handle a bad snap, and he was tackled in the end zone for a safety.

Michael Houseman would return the ensuing free kick 43 yards to the Saints' 26. It took five plays for Lisle to run the ball in from five yards out for a 16-0 lead.

Then the screws started to loosen on the game.

On the point-after-touchdown, St. Helena got called for two personal fouls, the first roughing the kicker and the second an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after the play was over.

The penalties placed the ball at the Saints' 30 for the kick off, and Berean Christian ran an onside kick that it recovered. On the next play, quarterback Matt Morgan lobbed a short pass to Miner for the team's lone touchdown pass, making it 23-0, all within four minutes.

"I was pleased with most of our game but we have several things to improve if we're going to be a top-flight team," Barcelon said.

Barcelon believed his team's focus and execution started to wane in the second half. The third quarter saw the Eagles lose two fumbles for turnovers, but both times St. Helena was forced to punt.

The Eagles recorded 13 tackles for a loss and held St. Helena to just 51 total yards in the first half.

With a third-and-one deep in Berean Christian territory, Tyler Charrette cutoff St. Helena quarterback Richard Hoppe's  pass and took it 75 yards to push the score to 37-0.

"The defense played really well and I was pleased with that," Barcelon said. "We want to keep getting better."
