Problem solving skills are invaluable and always will be. Math will always be the class that high school students struggle with. Math has remained the most since it’s been studied and goes from as simple as adding and subtracting to determining the amount of speed needed to gaining lift on a passenger airplane. Whoa. So, how do we solve the problem math proposes on high school students? Studying techniques, practice tests, homework, repetition, large erasers, hiding calculators under the desk, and any other method you can think of have been used and work to some level.
There are some really good studying techniques for improving on math skills. Grasping the basics is the first, and probably most crucial, step to be taken. Simple math sets the groundwork for every type of math that comes after it. If you can’t add, subtract, multiply, and divide small and large numbers accurately, how are you going to be able to work out quadratic equations? Basic math can be worked on easily with repetition because it shows up in everyday life on a regular basis. It can range from leaving the right tip at a restaurant to figuring out how much change to give/get after a transaction. There are plenty of games, apps, and study guides to help a student grasp the basics of math.
Math can be boring. It will most likely be boring but you have to figure out how to make it fun. It’s easier to learn something if you are interested in it. You can try to find a way to make it enjoyable but a lot of times this won’t work. You are either interested in it or you aren’t, right? This is where teaching comes into play. It’s very hard to force yourself to learn something by yourself if it isn’t interesting so it’s up to the teacher to make it interesting. This a difficult feat to accomplish if there are a lot of students in the class. The teacher simply doesn’t have the time to be one on one with every student. This is where a tutor can come in handy.
