Pedestrian Dies After Struck By Suspected DUI Driver In Walnut Creek

The 75-year-old motorist was arrested after the crash that also injured another pedestrian in the Rossmoor area.

WALNUT CREEK, CA — A male pedestrian died after he was struck Saturday night by a suspected drunken driver in the Rossmoor community of Walnut Creek, according to officials. A female pedestrian also suffered minor injuries in the crash.

The motorist, Stephen Kiesle, 75, of Walnut Creek, was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence and vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, the Walnut Creek Police Department said.

Kiesle, who sustained minor injuries in the incident, was trapped inside his vehicle, which was on its side, and was extricated by the Walnut Creek Fire Department, the agency said. He was car's only occupant.

The crash was reported around 9 p.m. by a 911 caller, who said two persons on the sidewalk on Tice Creek Drive near Fairlawn Court in Rossmoor were hit by a vehicle.

Police and fire crews performed life-saving measures on the male pedestrian, who was taken to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, the department said. The victim and the female pedestrian were not identified.

Kiesle was booked into the Contra Costa County Jail's Detention Facility in Martinez with $250,000 bail. The case will be reviewed by the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office.
