Walnut Creek Police Arrest Man For Grand Theft
Police say he was nabbed in their BAIT program.

WALNUT CREEK, CA — Walnut Creek Police run a successful Bait Program to catch thieves. They attach a bait tracker to a bicycle to catch bike thieves, or stash one in items like a woman's purse and then leave it in a car owned by the department. When the bait tracker moves, the police department is notified and the patrol officer closest to the bait is put on the trail.
Police announced Monday that another possible thief has been arrested. They say that last Friday the bait tracker was stolen, "Officers caught up with and stopped the suspect...who was arrested for grand theft and possession of stolen property."
Police Capt. Jay Hill told Patch Monday night that a decision on filing charges against the man has not yet been made by the Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office. His name of the man arrested appeared in this story earlier, but has been removed at the request of Capt. Hill in case the DA's Office decides against filing charges. The accused man "offered a plausible explanation" for being in possession of the bait tracker, according to Hill.
