Youth sports: Diablo FC 94 Wins Surf Cup

A few weeks ago, the Diablo FC 94 youth soccer team wasn't even entered in the prestigious Surf Cup in San Diego.

On Sunday the team celebrated as tournament champions.

A team dropped out two weeks before the tournament started, which prompted the tournament organizers to offer the spot to Diablo. It invitation was accepted and extra training sessions were added to prepare.

They worked.

Diablo started off with a 2-0 win against the Edmonton Drillers from Canada. Next game was against the highly-touted Texas Fire. The outcome was the same, a win 2-0. They then tied their rivals from Northern California, Santa Clara Sporting, 1-1 by a goal from Danny Glascock. Diablo did not even win their bracket but earned the wildcard for the most points without winning their preliminary group.

In the semifinals, Diablo beat South Bay Force Black 2-1 and was followed by the championship against Albertson Academy in New York.

A scoreless draw ensued, but Diablo prevailed in penalty kicks to win the tournament. The scoreless draw was due to a great defensive effort from Sean Hart, Yojay Basulto, Phillip Wcislo, Austin Gamm and Scott O'Sullivan.

The team is composed of players from a few East Bay cities including Walnut Creek, Concord and Lafayette: Nicolas Bob, Tommy Lisiak, Emmanuel Jimenez, Sean Hart, Danny Glascock, Carlos Garcia, Austin Gamm, Piero Farfan, Yojay Basulto, Andy Altamirano, Steve Muraoka, Scott O'Sullivan, Mateo Palacios, Conrad Rowling, Alex Shimberg, Sean Walker, Phillip Wcislo, Head Coach - Marquis White, Asst. Coach - Christopher Rodd, Manager - Nancy Lisiak.
