Weather forecast:
1. Homeless camp residents get eviction notices (pajaronian.com) — Residents at a long-standing homeless encampment off Airport Boulevard in Watsonville have been ordered to leave ahead of a property-owner-led cleanup starting Monday at 8 a.m. Watsonville Police accompanied the property manager as notices were handed out, following years of complaints about trash, pollution and safety at the Corralitos Creek site. Some long-term residents now face uncertainty about where they can go next.
2. PVUSD Board to consider Deputy Superintendent position (pajaronian.com) — PVUSD trustees will meet Wednesday evening in Watsonville to consider creating a new deputy superintendent position, likely filled by longtime administrator Mark Herbst with a $228,000 salary, even as they finalize layoffs for more than 100 employees. The proposal would centralize oversight of curriculum, HR and finance under one top administrator reporting directly to the superintendent, raising stakes for local schools, staff and families.
3. California lawmakers rush $25 million to hospitals without knowing who qualifies (santacruzsentinel.com) — Watsonville Community Hospital is among the facilities likely to qualify for a new $25 million state emergency grant program aimed at hospitals with less than 10 days of cash on hand. Lawmakers rushed the funding through in days, sparking questions about narrow criteria, transparency and whether the money will be enough to stabilize struggling community hospitals statewide.
4. College state track finals: Thrasher wins state heptathlon title for MPC (modbee.com) — A former Watsonville High athlete, Nathaniel Aceves-Aguilar, shined at the state community college track finals by winning the long jump during just his second decathlon and qualifying for the USA under-20 championships. The meet also featured a state heptathlon title for Monterey Peninsula College’s Lillian Thrasher and multiple All-American performances from Hartnell and MPC athletes across throws, hurdles, distance events and jumps.
