MONTEREY, CA — A 64-year-old Monterey County man was sentenced to 225 years to life in state prison after a jury convicted him of sexually assaulting five children over a period of 16 years, Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine M. Pacioni announced Friday.
Jose Guadalupe Reyes was sentenced by Judge Carrie Panetta after a jury on July 21 found him guilty of 14 counts of forcible lewd or lascivious acts on a child under 14 and two counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child under 14, according to the Monterey County District Attorney's Office.
Prosecutors said Reyes assaulted the five victims, identified in court documents as Jane Does 1 through 5, between 1996 and 2012 in the City of Marina.
The victims did not report the assaults until they were adults, with the DA's office noting research that said victims are more likely to delay report for sexual abuse when the victim is a minor and has a close relationship with the perpetrator.
Three victims were his nieces, one was his girlfriend's daughter, and one was his granddaughter, the DA's office noted.
Reyes was arrested in Texas in 2025 and extradited to Monterey County to face the charges.
Reyes was also ordered to register as a sex offender.
