Construction on Roundabout - Intersection Closed!

Update-July 7, 2014—Beginning today,  July 7th, the intersection, Pennsylvania Dr. & Clifford Ave. will be COMPLETELY CLOSED to all vehicle traffic and will reopen on August 15th. During this time, pedestrian access through the intersection will be maintained. While the intersection is closed, drivers and pedestrians should follow signs for detours.

Previous Information

Construction on Watsonville’s first roundabout began on Monday, June 23rd.

The Graniterock Company will begin construction of the roundabout at the intersection of Pennsylvania Drive and Clifford Avenue for the City of Watsonville.

Improvements include replacement of sidewalks, reconstruction of roadway, installation of several traffic islands and street lights.  The cost is $535,000 and will be funded with income from gas tax, fees payed by developers for future traffic improvements and an Air District grant of $198,540.

The roundabout is being built to relieve congestion in this area because the stop signs at the existing intersection cause traffic to back up at peak times; a traffic signal was considered but found not to be an appropriate option.  Four neighborhood meetings were held at the Starlight School campus during the past two years to discuss how to best deal with traffic at the intersection.

During construction, drivers and pedestrians should expect delays.  At times, the intersection will be closed and alternative routes should be used.

The roundabout will benefit drivers, pedestrians and neighbors by reducing delay, handling more vehicles, reducing the number and severity of accidents, improving air quality and providing aesthetic improvements.  Landscaping will include native and drought tolerant plants.  Funding is being sought to install artwork in the center island.
