WATSONVILLE, CA β€” A driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in Watsonville after their small Schnauzer jumped out of the back window of their car, became tangled in its leash and was dragged for about a half-mile, Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter said.

Two people in a car behind the dog watched as it jumped out of the car on a rural Watsonville road, then became stuck in its leash and was dragged along the side of the car as the driver continued. When the driver made a turn, the Schnauzer's collar came off and the dog rolled to the side of the road, the animal shelter said.

The witnesses stayed behind, comforting the dog as they waited for a Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter officer to arrive. Its paws were bloodied, photos indicate.
