Election Litter Comes With Every Campaign

Election Signs Must Be Posted Legally

Election time always brings election litter. Those flyers, campaign signs and mailers. Not much that we can do about most of it. But the campaign stuff that is placed illegally, can be taken down.

The law is simple on this issue. Signs may be on private property with permission of the owner. Signs may not be on public land or public structures. Election signs may not be be within view of a polling area and must be down within 10 days after an election.

Basically, it is not allowed to tape a sign to a bridge, telephone pole, Lamp post, or road sign. California also requires no advertising signs on a freeway.

It is legal for people to hold a sign as they walk, even if it is on a bridge.

signs that are within prohibited areas (public rights-of-way and areas less than 660 feet from the edge of Landscaped Freeway rights-of-way), put up too early (sooner than 90 days before the election), or taken down too late (more than 10 days after the election) will be removed by the DOT at the expense of the campaign.
