WATSONVILLE, CA — Pajaro Valley High School senior Jayleen Solorzano made campus history this week after she became the first athlete of that school to sign a letter of intent with a university on a basketball scholarship. This fall, Solorzano will begin her college career at Notre Dame de Namur in Belmont. Located in Silicon Valley, the school is a private Catholic university and the third oldest college in California. It's also the first college in the state authorized to grant the baccalaureate degree to women.

This past season, the 5-foot, 3-inch guard helped lead the Pajaro Valley basketball program to its first-ever winning season—22-5 overall and 10-0 in Pacific Coast Athletic League Santa Lucia Division play. The results earned the Grizzlies a postseason berth in the Central Coast Section playoffs. Solorzano averaged 28.8 points, 6.3 rebounds and 5.4 steals per game, according to MaxPreps.
