Laser Strikes Targeting Watsonville Pilots, Police Say

Lasers can incapacitate pilots, the Watsonville Police Department said.

WATSONVILLE, CA — People are targeting pilots flying into the Watsonville Municipal Airport with lasers, the Watsonville Police Department said. High-powered lasers can incapacitate pilots.

Police have added extra patrols in the area of the 330-acre airport at 100 Aviation Way. It's a federal crime to point lasers at aircraft, police said.

The Watsonville Municipal Airport said it serves 333 aircraft and 55,000 operations per year on its runways. The airport serves some 40 percent of Monterey Bay Area aviation activities.
