'Multiple Fatalities' In Watsonville Mid-Air Collision

WATSONVILLE, CA — The City of Watsonville said late Thursday afternoon it has "reports of multiple fatalities" following a mid-air collision between two small planes attempting to land at the city's municipal airport.

The city tweeted the information on its Twitter page.

Multiple agencies responded to Watsonville Municipal Airport, located at 100 Aviation Way, following the collision, according to the city's tweet. It added the report of the crash was received at 2:56 p.m.

Ian Gregor, an FAA spokesperson, said that the two aircraft, a single-engine Cessna 152 and a twin-engine Cessna 340, collided while the pilots were on their final approaches to the airport at about 3 p.m. One person was on board the Cessna 152 and two people were on board the Cessna 340.

Gregor said no injuries were reported to anyone on the ground.

Watsonville Mayor Ari Parker said early Thursday evening that the city is in grief following the mid-air collision. "We are grieving tonight from this unexpected and sudden loss," Parker said. "I want to express my deepest and most heartfelt condolences."
