MONTEREY COUNTY, CA – Police helped save a man who was believed to be suicidal Monday afternoon after they found him asleep in a bathtub while armed with a shotgun and handgun.
Around 4:05 p.m., police responded to an apartment in the 300 block of Glenwood Circle, after a person called asking officers to do a welfare check on their neighbor, according to police.
The caller said they hadn't seen their neighbor recently and that water was coming from his second floor apartment, police said.

When officers arrived, they looked through the man's apartment and found writing on a mirror that indicated he had taken his life. Officers also found gunshots in the ceiling of the unit, which had struck a water pipe,
which was creating the leak, according to police.
Once inside the unit's bathroom, officers found the man in the bathtub with a shotgun lying across his chest and an empty bottle of alcohol nearby. The man was alive, but sleeping with earplugs in.

The officers quietly removed the shotgun away from the man. While removing the shotgun, officers then noticed the man also had a semi-automatic handgun in his lap.
Officers then took control of the man's hands, so that he couldn't gain access to the handgun. Officers were eventually able to safely remove the man from the bathtub.
Police are crediting the quick-thinking officers with saving the man's life. Without their assistance, the situation could have potentially turned dangerous for both the officers and the individual, police said.
