On Wednesday afternoon, CHP arrested Kristopher Payopay, 40, of Lathrop, in connection to the shooting of an officer during a Tuesday night chase. He has been charged with attempted murder, CHP said.

Authorities say they located the male suspect walking along SR-17 near Laurel Road, following numerous reports of a man matching the suspect description. The man, whose name has not been released, was arrested after police traced him to a GMC Yukon connected with the incident.

The incident began at 9:51 p.m. on Tuesday, when Santa Cruz Area CHP officers stopped a black GMC Yukon at the shoulder of SR 17 southbound just north of Glenwood Drive, according to a CHP news release. As officers were trying to contact the vehicle occupants, the female driver started the car and sped away.

Officers chased the Yukon, but it refused to yield, police said. The car turned onto Scotts Valley Drive, and moments later began shooting at the officers, who then discontinued the pursuit.

A little while later, CHP received calls of an abandoned vehicle matching the Yukon's description on Tabor Drive in Scotts Valley. The Scotts Valley Police Department and numerous other agencies arrived, and initiated a shelter-in-place order for the area. After a long search, the scene was cleared, and the shelter-in-place order was lifted.
