ELKHORN SLOUGH, CA — The California Highway Patrol helped rescue a California Sea Lion stranded in the shoulder of Elkhorn Road Wednesday afternoon.

A tree cutter working in the area called CHP to report the sea lion was in the road, but CHP — Monterey Officer Jose Chavez arrived to find the 100-pound female in the shoulder, CHP said. He shut the road down to one lane and called the Marine Mammal Center for help.

The Marine Mammal Center arrived and confirmed the sea lion had swam unusually far from home, CHP said. The center transferred her into a crate to be taken to a Sausalito veterinarian.
