See: First Responders Surprise Coronavirus Patient Upon Discharge
Hospital staff, police and firefighters gathered to say goodbye to the first COVID-19 patient released from Watsonville Community Hospital.
WATSONVILLE, CA — First responders in Watsonville rallied to organize a special goodbye for the first COVID-19 patient to be released from Watsonville Community Hospital. Esther Abundis was discharged Friday after spending more than a month inside the hospital, battling the new coronavirus.
Hospital staff, medics, police officers and firefighters formed rows on either side of Abundis and clapped as a staff member wheeled her out of the hospital. A crowd gathered at the hospital entrance and in the lobby, carrying signs, snapping photos and saying goodbyes.
One woman even brought Abundis balloons.

"The care has been great,"Abundis said in a video posted by police. "Everybody was helpful."

Abundis said that her journey was an emotional one. She said she never thought it would happen to her and wondered if she would survive.
"I was blessed, but it's been hard on all of us," she said.
The first thing she planned on doing when she got home? Give her kids a hug.
