Watsonville Driver Arrested After Striking Elderly Man
The pedestrian was walking to his mailbox when he was hit by a driver suspected of using drugs.
WATSONVILLE, CA — An 88-year-old Aptos man checking his mail was seriously hurt last week when a Watsonville driver crashed into him, CHP said.
Driver Joseph Granados, 29, was uninjured, according to the California Highway Patrol. He was arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence of drugs, CHP said.
Granados was driving along eastbound Freedom Boulevard, west of Mariner Drive, shortly before 2 p.m. Friday. He veered off the side of the road, struck the pedestrian and crashed into the mailboxes on Freedom's south shoulder, CHP said.

The pedestrian was taken to Dominican Hospital and then flown to Valley Medical Center.
The cause remains under investigation.
