Watsonville Fundraises To Save Vandalized Playground

WATSONVILLE, CA β€” A Watsonville group is seeking $10,000 in online donations through GoFundMe to replace Muzzio Park playground equipment destroyed by vandals in July. The equipment was destroyed after wood was placed beneath the structure and set ablaze, the Watsonville Police Department said.

Friends of Watsonville Parks and Community Services initiated the campaign on Nov. 18, seeking to replace the structure with a larger one.

More than a third of the 6,600 residents in walking distance of Muzzio Park are youth, according to the GoFundMe. A third of nearby residents are impoverished.

The neighborhood has little green space and is high-density with apartment complexes and mobile home units, according to the GoFundMe. The park is well-used, in part because a Police Activities League Martial Arts Center and nonprofit community art center are onsite.
