Watsonville Shooting & Baseball Bat Attack Leads To Man's Arrest

The Moss Landing resident was taken into custody after being Tased by officers, officials said.

WATSONVILLE, CA – A Moss Landing man, reportedly involved in a Watsonville shooting and assault earlier this year, was Tasered and arrested Thursday as he was leaving his home, according to police.

Luis Monroy Perez allegedly was armed with a handgun and resistant during the 7:50 a.m. arrest. Officers deployed Tasers as he was taken into custody, the Watsonville Police Department said.

Perez was identified as a suspect connected to the shooting and attack that occurred Jan. 10 at about 6 p.m. on the 100 block of East Fifth Street, police said. The victim in the incident said he was called over to a vehicle stopped on the street with two individuals inside, one identified as Perez, officials said.

Based on the victim's and witnesses' accounts, police said Perez got out of the car and attacked the man with a baseball bat, the agency said.

"The victim turned around and ran for cover," the department said. "As he did, one of the two suspects fired several gunshots at the victim." Responding officers found a small-caliber handgun casing in the road, police said, adding that the victim was not struck.

Arrest and search warrants were issued for Perez, and Watsonville detectives, the department's Special Investigations Unit and the Santa Cruz Auto Theft Reduction Enforcement Team participated in his arrest after he was spotted driving from his house, officials said.

After being medically cleared, Perez was transported to jail, police said.
