Watsonville's First Latino Firefighter Dies

He served Watsonville for 32 years before his retirement and had a passion for mentoring a younger generation of firefighters.

WATSONVILLE, CA — Watsonville's first Latino and Spanish-speaking bilingual firefighter has died, the Watsonville Fire Department announced.

Ray Hermosillo died Sept. 7 after 32 years of serving the department and retiring in 1994. He was remembered as a "highly-skilled, multifaceted person with a no-nonsense professional approach to his job," the fire department said in tribute to Hermosillo.

He was a mentor and role model who influenced generations of firefighters.

Hermosillo was first hired in 1966 after serving as a volunteer firefighter, the fire department said.

"Thank you for your service Ray," the fire department said.
