Widespread Veggie Recall Impacts Grocers, Consumers: California

Salinas-based Mann Packing Co., Inc. announced the voluntary recall of more than 140 vegetable products over listeria concerns.

SALINAS, CA — More than 140 vegetable products sold at California and other supermarkets across the U.S. and Canada have been recalled over potential listeria contamination. Salinas-based Mann Packing Co., Inc. announced the voluntary recall Sunday.

The Mann Packing recall is a response to notification by the Food and Drug Administration and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency of a potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, the company said. To date, public health officials have not reported any illness associated with these products.

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
