Woman Killed Crawling Across Hwy 101 Lane Identified

MONTEREY COUNTY, CA – A woman struck and killed by a pickup truck on U.S. Highway 101 in Salinas early Saturday morning has been identified as 64-year-old Betty Arnold, according to the Monterey County coroner's office.

Arnold was crawling on a northbound lane on the freeway north of West Laurel Drive where a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado hit her shortly before 6:30 a.m., California Highway Patrol officials said.

The collision occurred in the rain before the sun rose, according to the CHP.

Arnold was pronounced dead at the scene, CHP officials said.

The driver, a 52-year-old Salinas man, was about to accelerate at the on-ramp and saw something on the road, but the dark conditions prevented him from stopping in time, according to the CHP.

The man wasn't under the influence of drugs or alcohol and didn't speed in the collision, CHP officials said.

He stayed at the scene where he cooperated with investigators and wasn't arrested, according to the CHP.
