Civil Rights Activists Call Off Protest Over Nearly All-White Oscars Race

The group had planned to protest the awards ceremony but called it off reportedly at the request of "Selma" director Ava DuVernay.

A group of civil rights activists called off plans to protest a nearly all-white Oscars race at tonight’s Academy Awards show, reportedly at the request of “Selma” director Ava DuVernay.

The local chapter of the National Action Network said, thought its spokesman, it would honor the request.

Najee Ali said his group would instead “pursue a direct dialogue with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences” via its leaders.

“We continue to be fervent in our mission for expansion and inclusion within the Academy and the motion picture industry as a whole,” Ali said in a statement.
