I love animals of all kinds. When someone tells me they don't like animals (especially cats and dogs) I'm no longer interested in anything else they have to say because that tells me all I need to know about them. It warms my heart to see poodles with colored bows or barrettes in their hair or a pampered pooch being pushed in a baby buggy. I recently got a kick out of being introduced on the street to a cat named Hillary, snuggled into a baby carrier around her guardian's neck. Conversely, it makes me angry to see a jogger or bike rider pulling a dog behind them on a leash attached to a tight collar. You can see and feel the dog's discomfort and panic and this can cause injury to the dog's neck. This is not exercising a dog, it is tormenting it. This is particularly true on hot days when a dog should not be outside for long periods, much less jogging for long distances. I also find it annoying to see people texting while walking their dogs, paying no attention to what is going on around them, never looking up long enough to see that their dog would like to take care of it's doggie business, sniff in the grass, or exchange greetings with other dogs, often so oblivious that they stumble into other people on the sidewalk as they text. It troubles me as well when I often see "professional" dog walkers with 5 or 6 dogs at a time, or even more, looking annoyed as they tug & pull on their leashes while trying to keep them all in a group. I assume they're trying to make as much money as they can on a single walk, but this is very unfair to all of the dogs and compromises the quality of their time outside. I'm hesitant to call these things animal abuse, but it is certainly negligence on behalf of probably otherwise well meaning people, most of whom love their pets and take good care of them. Our pets are always eager to please us and give us nothing but quality time and devotion. They most certainly deserve the same from us.
