Fairfax Football Moves Up to Division I Playoffs

The Los Angeles City Section's football advisory committee is adapting a new playoff format beginning next season which places teams in the higher or lower playoff bracket based on their MaxPreps rankings over the last two seasons.

Of the 59 schools that field football teams, the top 29 will be in Division I and the bottom 30 will be in Division II. Defending Division II champion Fairfax High is currently rated No. 8 and will compete in Division I in the fall.

The Lions finished 12-3-1 overall last season, finished in a tie for second with Palisades in the Western League and routed Chatsworth 51-7 in the Division II championship game at East LA College last season.

In the past, coaches could choose which playoff division they wanted their teams to be in prior to the season. Now, the only schools allowed to appeal their postseason placement are the last five schools in Division I (which can request to drop down) and the top five schools in Division II (which can request to be moved up), based on rankings.

Under the new format, playoff divisions will be set for two seasons.

A strong indication that the Western League is improving is that five of the six schools in the league (Venice, Westchester, Fairfax, Hamilton and Palisades) will be in the Division I bracket in the fall. Only University, which went winless last year, remains in Division II. 

Venice and Westchester have long been upper division teams, but they will now be joined by Fairfax, Hamilton and Palisades--all of which made the Division II playoffs last season.

The advisory committee was scheduled to meet Friday to approve the new playoff alignments and finalize the ranking formula and criteria for seeding.
