Criss had me at hello from the moment he appeared on stage. He doesn't just play the role of Hedwig...He is Hedwig reincarnate, !!! I was captured and enthralled for the next hundred minutes, that flew by while traversing with Hedwig Robinson on an exhilarating illuminating thrilling journey of self discovery.
“Internationally ignored song stylist” Hedwig is out to set the record straight about her life, her loves, and the botched operation that left her with that “angry inch.”
Darren's opening kudos, dedicated to Hollywood’s infamous and world renowned Pantages Theatre and its head honcho, Bob Nederlander, displays a terrific uncompromising talent from the get go. He effortlessly commands the audience of eager titillated fans, all similarly stunned by his magnum opus.
Criss continues to magnetize theatre goers with a moving rendition of "The Origin of Love," a lullaby Hedwig's mom used to sing to him. He draws the audience into his world as if each were a personal confidante. You will feel honored to be privy to Hedwig's "appointments and disappointments."
The energetic piece, "Sugar Daddy," presents a much appreciated opportunity for Hedwig to interact with the packed room, as he performs lap dances and speaks directly to lucky individuals (a good reason to get front row seats!!)
"Wig in a Box," a gripping dramatic number is hair-raising (pun intended) and will take your breath away. When the screen comes down for beyond belief visual imagery by projection designer, Benjamin Pearcy For 59 Productions, the house goes wild, once again frozen in awe.
Criss is a master at sacred silences during which we witness Hedwig's intense emotion and anguish. His skilled nonverbal communication, body language, and facial expressions are a treat.
Hedwig welcomes you to accompany him as a complete physical and psychological transformation occurs right before our eyes. The moral of the story can be summed up in the words of Hedwig: "to walk away you have to leave something behind."
The piece de resistance is the final tune sung by Lena Hall. It's the epitome of excellence, confirming precisely why Hall won the Tony for best featured performance.
Members of Hedwig’s rockin’ out stupendous gifted and accomplished band, “The Angry Inch,” aka “Tits of Clay,” include music director Justin Craig (guitar/ keyboards); Matt Duncan (bass); Tim Mislock (guitar); and Peter Yanowitz (drums), all of whom originated their roles on Broadway.
The costumes by Arianne Phillips, who made her Broadway debut with Hedwig, are icing on the cake. Stunning and spectacular...they play a vital part in the extravaganza, acting as a significant character onto themselves.
Hedwig and the Angry Inch, the film, was directed by John Cameron Mitchell and won the Audience Award and Best Director Awards at Sundance Film Festival. Mitchell also won Best New Director from the National Board of Review, the Gotham Awards, & the LA Critics Society.
