Linda Perry's Deep Dark Robot Takes The Roxy by Storm

Christina Aguilera and Juliette Lewis are among those in attendance Thursday to check out the latest project of the industry legend.

Linda Perry—best known as fronting the '90s rock group 4 Non Blondes and writing/producing for some of today’s top artists—graced  Thursday night.

After years of cranking out mega hits for chart-toppers, such as Gwen Stefani, Pink, and Christina Aguilera, Perry was anxious to step out of the studio and back into the spotlight. Her latest project with Fatso Jeston drummer Tony Tornay, Deep Dark Robot, played to a full house of diehard Perry fans, industry professionals, and avid music lovers.

Among those in attendance were Juliette Lewis and Christina Aguilera with boyfriend Matt Rutler, who gave the paparazzi a reason to perch out front of the venue until the commencement of the show.

The band just released their debut album, “8 Songs About a Girl.” According to Perry, the album was inspired by a girl who broke her heart and toyed with her emotions.

“I just started writing songs, because I started getting really hurt and confused and that’s what I do, I write songs,” said Perry, who explained that halfway through the process, she realized that her songs were turning into so much more than a simple outlet for releasing frustration. “She ended up being a muse and, because of her, I made an album. Because of her, I’m going out on tour."

Taking the stage in skinny jeans, chunky heels, a black long-sleeve thrown over a ripped up striped t-shirt and a lightening bolt guitar strap, Perry belted out lyrics to tracks on “8 Songs About a Girl.” She was joined on stage by two additional guitar players, a bassist, drummer, keyboardist, and back up vocalist.

Halfway through the set, she jumped on the keyboard to slow things down a bit. While fans were given the opportunity to hear the stripped down vocal abilities of Perry and her keyboard, she became consumed by emotion, getting tearful in the middle of a song.

After explaining that she just can’t help becoming so emotional over her music, which earned her a heartfelt round of applause, Perry changed the subject and dove into her rendition of The Rolling Stone’s “Angie.”

The encore consisted of a tribute to Iggy Pop, which was in honor of his birthday, and then Deep Dark Robot closed the set with a song called “Somebody Love Me Now.” The audience gave Perry and her band a well deserved applause and booed over the fact that the show was over.

Even Aguilera stuck around until the end of the show before scampering backstage to pay her respects, much to the dismay of the paparazzi, who were hoping to call it an early night.
