Lions Are No Match for Mater Dei
The Fairfax High girls basketball team makes an early exit in the regional playoffs.

Some reward for a successful season.
After losing in the semifinals of the City Section Division I playoffs to eventual champion Carson, the Fairfax High girls' basketball team had to wait a week to see who it would play in the first round of the Southern California Regional playoffs.
The Lions won 25 games this season and were Western League champions, but the draw pitted them against Mater Dei, the top seed in the 16-team tournament and the No. 1-ranked team in the country. The result was predictable--a 79-25 loss in Santa Ana that ended Fairfax's season.

Sophomore forward John'ea Thompson had 19 points and junior captain Brittany Byrd added seven in defeat for the unseeded Lions (25-10), who trailed 47-14 at halftime and were held to four points in the fourth quarter by the Southern Section Division 1AA champion Monarchs (30-1).
Fairfax last made the state playoffs two years ago, losing to Cajon of San Bernardino 64-39 in the first round.
