“ ’Selma’, King and Rabbi” Theme of Talk at Hollywood Temple Beth El

“ ’Selma’ ”,King and Rabbi” will be the theme of a presentation by Rabbi Norbert Weinberg, following services at Hollywood Temple Beth El, Saturday, January 17, at 11:45 AM. Services begin at 9:45 AM.

Rabbi Weinberg will reflect on his own experience as secretary to Rabbi Heschel, who marchd alongside Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the famous Selma March of 1965 that set the momentum for the Civil Rights Act to follow. While the movie “Selma” purports to reflect the events, criticism has mounted that the film erased the involvement of Jewish activists, such as Rabbi Heschel, from the record of history. Weinberg expresses concern that Dr. King’s teachings on Jews and Israel are being intentionally distorted and removed from the public memory.

Rabbi Weinberg , seeking to set the record straight, will read from Dr. King’s vigorous defense of the Israel of Israel to security , which Weinberg, as a student, heard him deliver just weeks before the assassination, as well as from Rabbi Heschel’s call to action against racism.
