Wednesday's Scoop: Senior Moments, Comics and Drug Novel

Book Soup hosts the author of a fictionalized memoir about drug use while seniors will read selections from the city's "Senior Moments" publication. Plus storytimes at the Weho Library and comics at Laugh Factory.

Greetings and welcome to City Scoop. Today is Wednesday, May 23, the 144th day of 2012. Here’s what’s going on in West Hollywood today.

Drugs: A Novel

In the new fictionalized memoir Drugs: A Novel, author J.R. Helton offers a rousing tale of adventure, debauchery and absurdity. The book is getting raves for its unapologetic, yet honest commentary about the main character’s wide ranging drug use and the effects each drug has on his body and soul. Helton will discuss and sign copies of the book at starting at 7 p.m. He’s joined by special guest Joseph Mattson, the author of The Speed Chronicles.

Multiple Laughs

The offers three shows. At 6 p.m., an All-Ages show begins featuring comics Sunda Croonquist, Dan Ahdoot and Max Amini. At 8 p.m., a Comedy Bazaar show begins featuring comics Kvon, Sherwin Arae and Peter the Persian. At 10 p.m. “Dot Comedy” begins featuring comics Dean Delray, Grant Cotter and Jay Larson.

Storytime

The hosts two different storytimes. At 11:15 a.m., a toddler storytime for ages 18 to 36 months gets underway with stories, songs, fingerplay and more. Then at 3:30 p.m., a family storytime is offered for children and their parents. Both are free.

Board meetings.

The Senior Advisory Board meets at 2 p.m. in the Community Center in . In addition to the agenda items, which you can view by clicking here, the meeting will also feature several seniors reading selections from the city’s Senior Moments publication, an annual collection of writing by seniors. The Disabilities Advisory Board will meet at 6 p.m. in . View the agenda by clicking here. The public is welcome to attend both meetings.
