The best plots aren’t controlled by the author but spring from the characters themselves. The more we realize that our characters are sovereign beings with independent consciousnesses, the better prepared we are to traverse what visiting instructor Joshua Mohr calls plaracterization, or plot plus characterization. In this seminar, students will ponder characters’ decision-making, the causality between plot points, and how to keep a reader turning pages. Plaracterization is a strategy that will help any writer dig deep down into characters, plot, and a story’s very DNA. The seminar will include lecture, discussion, and writing prompts.
