Another CSUN Fraternity Suspended Pending Investigation of 'Hazing and Sexual Misconduct'

Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity has been suspended from the campus of Cal State Northridge following university investigations into alleged hazing and sexual misconduct, officials confirmed today.

TKE’s suspension became effective Jan. 21, and extends through July 20, 2018, CSUN spokesman Jeff Noblitt said.

The alleged improper behavior happened during the fall 2013 pledge process, including at a retreat at Fort Tejon, he said.

The fraternity’s suspension comes in the wake of the suspension of all Greek pledging activity indefinitely at the school in October, Noblitt said.

The university’s decision to suspend TKE was made after CSUN withdrew recognition from two other Greek organizations recently.

Pi Kappa Phi was banned forever last fall following the July 1 death of 19-year-old Armando Villa.

“They will never be on our campus again,” Noblitt said.

The Sylmar teen collapsed on a fraternity-sponsored hike in the Angeles National Forest and died. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office is considering whether to file charges in that case.

Another fraternity, Pi Kappa Alpha, was placed on interim suspension in October and has been banned for six years due to allegations of hazing of pledges during a retreat that same month.

The university halted all fraternity pledging activity in October, and formed a committee to revise pledging guidelines for fraternities and sororities to emphasize the safety and well-being of students.

The new guidelines will be reviewed by university administrators, and forwarded to the Greek organizations, which must submit a plan of compliance before they will be allowed to resume pledging activities.
