Explosion Blows out Roof, Wall of Winnetka Home's Garage

Two men were injured in the blast.

An explosion in Winnetka partially blew out the roof and wall of a garage in Winnetka today, sparking a fire and critically injuring two men, authorities said.

The cause of the midnight explosion at 8621 N. Hatillo Avenue was under investigation, said Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Katherine Main. The victims, both in their mid-30s, appeared to have suffered burn injuries, she said.

The fire department dispatched 38 firefighters, and a knockdown was declared in 23 minutes, Main said, adding that the blaze was confined to the garage. The department described the garage as converted but did not immediately confirm it was being used as living accommodations.
