Firefighters Quell Saturday Morning Canoga Blaze

Nearly 100 firefighters were assigned to the early morning fire.

Fire gutted an under-construction, three-story apartment building in neighboring Canoga Park early Saturday morning.

Firefighters responding to a 12:07 a.m. alarm at 7050 Vassar Ave. reported a "loom up," meaning flames were visible, and a transformer apparently exploded on the rear of the property. Part of the main building apparently collapsed.

The blaze was declared out at 1:16 a.m., fire department spokesman Erik Scott said. Nearly 100 firefighters were assigned to the blaze, he said.

One firefighter was taken to a hospital in fair condition to be treated for a hand injury and taken off duty, Scott said. Two others were checked out, one for an eye injury and the other for an unspecified illness, and both remained on duty, he said.
