Firefighters Rescue Hiker in Woodland Hills

The man became seriously ill while hiking near Castle Peak.

Firefighters today worked to rescue a man who became seriously ill while hiking in hilly terrain near Castle Peak in the Woodland Hills area, authorities said.

Emergency personnel sent to the area of Vanowen Street and Valley Circle Boulevard about 8:45 a.m. planned to use a helicopter to hoist the man to a nearby location where an ambulance was waiting to take him to a hospital, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

A preliminary assessment indicated that the man was in serious condition, department officials said.

A second hiker was not injured.
