Los Angeles residents are poised to vote on when to vote today with a pair of charter amendments that would switch City Council and school board elections from the current off-years to the same years as the governor and presidential elections.

Backers of the election year switch say voter turnout has proven to be stubbornly low in the odd-year city elections -- with less than 21 percent of registered voters going to the polls in the 2013 primaries.
By combining local races with with higher-profile elections, more voters would come out to vote for city and school board officials, say supporters, who include Council President Herb Wesson, electoral reform group California Common Cause and the League of Women Voters.

But critics of the measures, including a group called Save Our Elections, say lumping city elections onto the end of a lengthy ballot actually lowers engagement with local issues.
Los Angeles voters will also head to the polls today to select from among more than 30 candidates vying for City Council seats in seven races.
Additionally, four seats on the Los Angeles Unified School District board are up for grabs in today’s election, although the bulk of attention is being paid to incumbent Bennett Kayser’s effort to hold onto his District 5 seat in the face of staunch opposition from charter-school supporters.
