Mayor Says 'Meh' to Poor Grade from LA Times

Dinged by the newspaper on courage and leadership, Mayor Eric Garcetti responds, "I'm not a grade-grubber."

Responding to an overall “C” rating given to him by the Los Angeles Times for his first two years in office, Mayor Eric Garcetti said today he isn’t one to fixate on letter grades.

“I’m not a grade-grubber,” Garcetti said.

In its report card on Garcetti, The Times took issue with the mayor’s “political courage,” giving him a “D” grade and criticizing him for not taking stronger stances on various issues, including a recently adopted city ordinance that made it easier for the city to dismantle homeless encampments.

The Times also called Garcetti’s non-stance on the Department of Water and Power’s proposed utility rate hikes “insincere,” saying he should “make an honest case about the city’s infrastructure needs and what it will take to pay for them.”

Garcetti did better in The Times’ “vision” category, receiving a “B- plus” for his efforts.

Garcetti earned C grades in all other categories -- “leadership,” “effectiveness” and “transparency.”

The Times handed out a “C-plus” grade to Council President Herb Wesson, a “B-plus” to City Attorney Mike Feuer and a “B-minus” to City Controller Ron Galperin.
