UPDATE: Possible Underground Explosion Blows Covers Off Manholes

An apparent explosion that damaged an underground electrical cable and blew out at least two manhole covers Tuesday in Woodland Hills also injured one woman and cut power to 13 utility customers, officials said.

The explosion at 21700 Victory Blvd., near Owensmouth Avenue, was reported at 3:52 p.m., said Joe Ramallo, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.

The blast, which may have been in an underground electrical vault, blew up at least two manhole covers and slightly injured a woman who was taken to the hospital for treatment of her injuries, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey said.

The explosion damaged an underground cable and cut power to 13 LADWP customers, according to Ramallo.

"We expect to have the damage repaired and power restored to our customers by midnight," he said.

The cause of the explosion remained under investigation, Ramallo said.
