Update: Woodland Hills Man Pleads Not Guilty to Murder Charges

He was to be arraigned Friday.

A Woodland Hills man was charged Friday with murder and other counts stemming from the heroin-overdose death of a 13-year-old boy.

Brett Cronin, 23, was expected to be arraigned some time in the afternoon in Van Nuys on charges of murder, furnishing or administering heroin to a minor and child abuse. He remained jailed in lieu of $1 million bail.

According to prosecutors, the victim was a friend of Cronin's 14-year-old stepbrother. The victim was spending the night at his friend's house in Woodland Hills Monday, and the fatal injection of heroin was administered when the boy and Cronin went into a bathroom, prosecutors said.

Los Angeles police initially said Cronin had administered the fatal dose, but later said the teen "voluntarily injected the heroin but had a life-threatening reaction. By the time paramedics were called, the victim's reaction proved to be fatal.''

Cronin faces a possible sentence of life in prison with the possibility of parole, according to the District Attorney's Office.
