1. Sacramento charter school seeks move to Sutter County after $180M audit dispute (sacbee.com) — Yuba City residents may see a controversial Sacramento charter school try again to open locally after the Yuba City Unified board unanimously rejected its petition over academic and financial concerns. Highlands Community Charter, rebranding as California Learning Academy, is appealing to the Sutter County Board of Education while disputing a state audit that says it wrongly received nearly $180 million.
2. Enter Sandman, Yuba City Haunted House Returns (wheatlandsun.com) — Yuba City's free neighborhood Haunted House at 441 Pelican Place is returning this October with its biggest build yet, themed around a 1950s serial killer called Sandman. Open select evenings Oct. 16–30 from 7–10 p.m., the attraction uses elaborate homemade sets, custom audio, and live actors, and is recommended only for ages 13 and up with an accompanying adult.
3. Residential Resurfacing Underway in Yuba City (wheatlandsun.com) — Road crews are resurfacing residential streets across Yuba City through November, affecting nine areas from north of Butte House Road to south of Lincoln Road. Residents will get about 48 hours' notice, must move vehicles by 8 a.m. on workdays, and should expect temporary parking and driveway restrictions, loose rock, and shifting schedules depending on weather.
4. Pioneer Community Energy Coming to Yuba City (territorialdispatch.com) — Yuba City residents and businesses will gain a new electricity supplier in October 2027, when Pioneer Community Energy begins serving local customers while PG&E continues handling delivery and billing. The city will join Pioneer's governing board, helping shape rates and programs like rebates, demand‑response rewards, and solar and battery options. A multilingual outreach campaign is planned throughout 2027.
5. The Acting Company's production of 'Arsenic and Old Lace' in Yuba City is based on an intriguing crime (appeal-democrat.com) — Yuba City theater fans can catch The Acting Company's new production of "Arsenic and Old Lace" running through October 11 at 815 B Street. The long-loved dark comedy, inspired by a real-life crime case, features a large local cast and offers Friday–Sunday performances with tickets available by phone or at the box office.
