📰 News we're reading

1. Colorado's bats live in surprising places. Biologists, and volunteer observers, are trying to find them. (coloradosun.com) — Boulder County volunteers are heading to places like the Blue Jay Mine at dusk to count bats for Colorado Bat Watch, helping scientists track local populations as white-nose syndrome spreads. Their observations, combined with acoustic monitoring, are building crucial data on how bats in and around Boulder County are faring and where they roost. Residents can also report roosts or sick bats, making community participation key to protecting these important insect-eaters.

2. Boulder Police Seek Help Identifying Suspect Tied to Two Gold Bars Fraud Schemes That Cost Victims About $700,000 in Elaborate Impersonation Scams (centralrecorder.com) — Boulder police are asking residents to help identify a man linked to two elaborate gold-bar fraud schemes that cost a Boulder woman and man about $700,000 combined. Investigators describe the suspect, his Hyundai Ioniq 5, and the Iris-area Safeway handoff, while stressing that no legitimate agency will ever demand gold, crypto, or gift cards and urging anyone suspicious to call police immediately.

3. Colorado man who was free on bond in wife's alleged killing is jailed after hit-and-run (sentinelcolorado.com) — A man jailed at the Boulder County Jail after allegedly violating bond conditions in his wife's killing case now faces a new hearing that could change his release status. Prosecutors say Barry Morphew left southern Colorado for Denver International Airport, where he was involved in a hit-and-run, despite strict travel limits. Boulder-area readers may see heightened attention around the jail and upcoming court actions.

4. Colorado Bureau of Investigation supports findings in original investigation of Megan Trussell's death (9news.com) — State investigators have finished reviewing the death of University of Colorado Boulder student Megan Trussell and concluded the Boulder County Sheriff's Office handled the case reasonably, reaffirming suicide as the cause. Her parents, who searched Boulder's unhoused community for answers, say the CBI meeting left them dissatisfied and plan to seek full autopsy records for an independent review.

5. Global warming is ruining their way of life. These Colorado ranchers demand accountability (latimes.com subscription) — Boulder's climate-change lawsuit against Suncor and Exxon Mobil is headed to the U.S. Supreme Court on Oct. 5, and Colorado ranchers are lining up behind it. They describe how worsening drought, shrinking snowpack, and costly feed are threatening their livelihoods, and argue fossil fuel companies should help cover mounting climate-related damages instead of leaving Boulder taxpayers and rural communities to shoulder the burden alone.
