📰 News we're reading

1. Boulder-area cone zones for Sept. 12-18 (dailycamera.com) — Expect lane closures this week at Broadway's intersections with Regent and Table Mesa, plus ongoing work and detours along 28th Street, as Boulder pushes major transit and safety upgrades. Nearby county projects, including Baseline Road and 120th Street closures and resurfacing on Overland and Ridge roads, could significantly affect commutes and errands for Boulder-area drivers and cyclists through fall and beyond.

2. CU Boulder enrollment falls for the first time since 2020 as international student numbers plunge (9news.com) — CU Boulder's enrollment has dipped for the first time since 2020, with 400 fewer international students driving a $25 million revenue shortfall that could ripple through the local economy. University and immigration experts in Boulder link the decline to tighter federal rules and travel uncertainty, warning it may deter top researchers and weaken the town's research-driven community over time.

3. Integral buys Heritage Environmental Consultants (bizwest.com) — A Boulder-based environmental consulting firm, Integral Consulting Inc., has acquired Heritage Environmental Consultants, expanding its expertise in ecology, hydrology, and air and water quality services. While financial terms weren't disclosed, the deal strengthens Integral's ability to offer integrated environmental planning and permitting support to clients, reinforcing Boulder's role as a hub for environmental and scientific consulting work.

4. Summer of Science: Students in Hawai'i and Colorado Complete NSO Internships (nso.edu) — Undergraduates from around the country spent the summer in Boulder working with the National Solar Observatory and partner labs through the Boulder Solar Alliance REU, tackling solar physics, space weather, and data projects. Their 10-week stay culminated in a local symposium where students presented research to Boulder's space science community, strengthening the town's role as a hub for cutting-edge solar research and mentoring.

5. Community roundtable for Colorado Connector passenger rail draws small crowd (gazette.com) — Boulder is slated to be a key stop on the proposed Colorado Connector passenger rail, with the first phase aiming to link Boulder, Denver and Fort Collins by 2029. A new 0.333% sales and use tax across the Front Range Passenger Rail District would help fund later phases, sparking debate over costs, ridership and how much congestion relief the line can really deliver.
