1. Montezuma-Cortez School District interim superintendent seeks parent, family input through survey (the-journal.com) — Parents and guardians in the Montezuma-Cortez School District are being asked to complete a new 37-question family survey that will help shape improvements at local schools in Cortez and surrounding communities. If your child attends any district school, from Beech Street Preschool to Montezuma-Cortez High School or Southwest Open, you're encouraged to share what's working, what isn't, and any barriers you see to learning and engagement.
2. Steady rain for Southwest Colorado is likely through Wednesday; flood watch issued (the-journal.com) — A flood watch is in effect as Cortez faces steady rain through Wednesday, with up to 2 inches possible on already saturated ground. With September already among the warmest and wettest on record, residents are urged to watch for localized flooding, debris flows, and rock slides and to stay updated on National Weather Service alerts.
3. Charges filed against Cortez man suspected of standoff with police (the-journal.com) — A 69-year-old Cortez man has been charged with seven counts after an August standoff in a Ridge Drive home, where police say multiple shots were fired. Cortez Police report that officers used chemical munitions before the man surrendered; his next court appearance, a plea hearing, is set for October 22 with bail at $50,000.
4. Renewables continue to gain in Colorado (bigpivots.com) — Colorado's electricity mix has quietly crossed a milestone, with renewables providing just over half of the state's power over the past year. For Cortez-area residents, the 110‑megawatt Dolores Canyon Solar project just north of town is a key contributor, underscoring how large-scale solar and new battery storage are reshaping the region's energy landscape.
