1. Denver Ballot Issue 4A asks voters to approve $44 million mill levy override for DPS (denverpost.com) — Denver voters will soon decide Ballot Issue 4A, which would raise about $44 million a year for Denver Public Schools through a property tax mill levy override. The measure would fund staff pay raises, mental health and special education expansions, and career-education hubs, costing homeowners roughly $11.50 annually per $100,000 of home value if approved.
2. Carrie Coon, John Cho and ADRIAN! land atop Denver Film Fest VIP list (denvergazette.com) — Denver film lovers can start planning for the 49th Denver Film Festival, which will bring 143 movies, big-name guests, and special events to venues across the city from Oct. 22 to Nov. 1. With screenings at Sie FilmCenter, Ellie Caulkins Opera House, MCA Denver, and more, residents can choose from premieres, celebrity appearances, and even pay-what-you-can showings at the Ellie.
3. Man sentenced to prison for role in puppy theft at Centennial pet store (fox21news.com) — A Denver man has been sentenced to two years in state prison, plus a year of parole, for helping steal two English bulldog puppies from a Centennial pet store in 2025. Investigators say he faked a medical emergency to distract employees while an accomplice grabbed the dogs, which were later recovered, offering closure for metro Denver pet lovers following the case.
4. Wild bear raids Nexstar reporter's garage fridge (fox2now.com) — A KDVR reporter in Denver returned from briefly walking her dogs to find a bear rummaging through her open garage, helping itself to chicken nuggets and dog food before coming back for a second look. Wildlife officers weren't involved, but the incident underscores a key safety reminder for Denver-area residents: keep garage doors closed and food secured to avoid attracting bears into neighborhoods.
5. For Denver's Kennedy High School, community support goes beyond Friday night football (denver7.com) — Kennedy High School in southwest Denver is working to rebuild its tight-knit community feel as open enrollment draws more neighborhood students elsewhere. Alumni, local businesses, and current students are reviving traditions like the Bear Valley homecoming parade and supporting school events, hoping to restore the school's role as a central gathering place for Denver families.
