1. Rocky Mountain National Park sets Old Fall River Road closing date (kansas.com) — If you're heading from Estes Park into Rocky Mountain National Park for fall colors or the elk rut, plan around Old Fall River Road's seasonal closure schedule starting Oct. 6. The road will alternate between full closures and limited access for bikes, leashed pets, and pedestrians before reopening for non-vehicle winter use on Oct. 17. Trail Ridge Road remains open for scenic drives.
2. Black Hollow Sun Now Powers Northern Colorado (northfortynews.com) — A massive new solar complex near Severance is now generating enough electricity for about 73,000 homes and businesses, directly serving Estes Park through the Platte River Power Authority. This long-planned project should help keep local power reliable while adding more renewable energy to our grid, with future battery storage also planned in each owner community, including Estes Park.
3. Rut Season on Full Display: Elk Smashes Car Window in Colorado (outdoors.com) — An out-of-town driver recently had a car window smashed by a rutting bull elk while stopped near a roadside herd in Estes Park, underscoring how intense elk behavior is right now. 4. Wolves in the Throne Room share 'Estuary' music video (nextmosh.com) — Fans of heavy, atmospheric metal in Estes Park can look ahead to January 15–17, 2027, when Wolves in the Throne Room bring their new album Estuary to the Fire in the Mountains festival at the Stanley Hotel. The band has just released the album's title track and music video, giving locals an early taste of what to expect from the upcoming live set.
5. In Battle Of Rutting Colorado Elk, Bull Pulls Rival Under Water And Steals Harem (cowboystatedaily.com) — A dramatic elk fight at Evergreen Lake saw one bull briefly pin another underwater before both walked away, highlighting how aggressive rut season can be across Colorado. The story also recalls a bull in Estes Park recently roaming town with a rival's broken antler tip stuck in his neck, reminding locals to stay cautious and give rutting elk extra space.
