📰 News we're reading

• Rifle police rule out danger after loud noises (westernslopenow.com) — Rifle residents woke up to loud noises Wednesday, but police say they were only target practice at the Rifle Sportsman's Club and a planned safety drill at Wamsley Elementary, with no active threats. Several Garfield Re-2 schools briefly went into Secure status as a precaution, while officers patrolled the city and confirmed everyone could safely continue their day.

• Garfield County commissioner candidates debate growth, South Bridge and economic future (postindependent.com) — Garfield County commissioner candidates recently squared off at the Ute Theater in Rifle, debating housing costs, transportation and the county's economic future. They clashed over South Bridge funding and data centers, but agreed on keeping the RFTA Hogback bus—critical for Rifle and Silt commuters—and on improving collaboration across towns to tackle affordability, water and growth.

• A new legal path for stream restoration in Colorado runs into old water conflicts (aspenjournalism.org) — Stream restoration work under Colorado's SB 270 is directly affecting the Rifle-based West Divide Water Conservancy District, which worries new projects could impact its reservoirs and downstream users. The article explains how post-assisted log structures are being used on nearby creeks, the legal gray areas around water rights, and how state officials and conservation groups are trying to balance ecological recovery with long-standing irrigation needs.
